Joseph Saddler aka, Grandmaster Flash is one of the trinity of godfathers responsible for evolving the hip-hop musical genre. Born on January 1th 1958 in Bridgetown, Barbados and raised in the Bronx, Flash attended Samuel Gompers High School where he learned how to repair electronic equipment.
Joseph’s fascination of his father’s record collection and his electronic acuities had led him to innovate techniques culminating into an art form of Turntablism. He pioneered the “Quick Mix Theory” that enables him to seamlessly loop any part of a song by using two records also the “Clock Theory” and “Back spinning”. Flash took two turntables and a mixer turned them into an instrument – transforming popular music forever.
In the late 1970s, he formed his own group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Which is known for their iconic hit
‘The Message’.
Grandmaster Flash is a music icon and apart of the first hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Grandmaster Flash is woven into the very fabric of hip-hop culture as one of its forefathers. Today his techniques are used as the foundation for Dj’s around the world.
